Ordering Thick Plate Steel Cutting — What to Confirm Before Production Starts

Thick plate above 30mm behaves differently to thin plate. These are the considerations to address before the order starts.

Thermal distortion on long or narrow parts

Flame cutting generates significant heat. Long, narrow parts — high length-to-width ratio — are most susceptible to distortion. Segmented cutting sequences and symmetric nesting reduce the risk, but must be planned before production. If your parts are long and narrow, flag this early.

Confirm: Part geometry and whether distortion tolerance is defined.

Minimum hole size is approximately 0.5× plate thickness

Cutting holes smaller than this ratio on thick plate increases distortion risk and produces inconsistent results. For example: 30mm plate → minimum 15mm hole diameter. If your drawing requires smaller holes, this needs to be discussed before cutting.

Confirm: Check your smallest hole diameter against the 0.5× rule before submitting drawings.

Burn marks at hole edges on flame-cut thick plate

Thick plate flame cutting can produce slight burn marks at hole perimeters. These can be ground smooth afterward, but if your application requires clean hole edges for fit-up, assembly, or appearance, state this requirement before production.

Confirm: Whether clean hole edges are required and specify grinding if needed.

Edge condition and surface quality expectations

Surface quality is controlled according to material, thickness and project requirements. Flame-cut edges are typically rougher than laser-cut edges. Deburring and slag removal are standard, but if your next process — welding prep, coating, or tight assembly — requires smoother edges, grinding must be specified at quotation.

Confirm: What the cut edges will be used for and whether additional grinding is needed.

Weight, packing, and freight implications

Thick plate orders are heavy. Pallet load limits, wooden crate requirements for fragile profiles, and freight cost change significantly with plate thickness. Include the destination and approximate part weights in your initial inquiry.

Confirm: Approximate total weight and packing requirements at quotation stage.

Summary

Thick plate orders require more upfront discussion than thin plate. Distortion, hole geometry, edge condition, and packing are the four areas most likely to cause problems if not addressed before production. Get these on the table at quotation stage.
