Steel Plate Cutting Price Guide: What Affects the Cost Per Kg
There is no standard price per kg for steel plate cutting. The cost depends on five variables. Understanding each one helps you get an accurate quote faster — and evaluate supplier quotes more accurately.
Why There Is No Standard Price Per Kg
A 20mm Q235 rectangle costs significantly less per kg to cut than a 20mm Q690 part with 50 holes and a beveled edge. Same weight. Same thickness. Completely different price.
Price-per-kg comparisons between suppliers only make sense if every other variable is identical. They rarely are. The five factors below drive the actual cost.
Factor 1 — Material Cost
Raw material is usually the largest single cost component for standard orders. The steel grade determines the base material price: Q235 and A36 are generally the most economical; Q690, NM400, and stainless are typically significantly higher.
Steel prices fluctuate with market conditions. If you request a quote and then hold the order for 30+ days before confirming, material cost at time of production may differ from the quoted price.
Factor 2 — Cutting Process
Laser and flame have different cost structures per meter of cut. For thin plate, laser is typically still the lower total cost because it cuts faster and produces less waste.
For thick plate above 55mm, flame cutting is the applicable option at YUNCUT. Where both methods are feasible, cost depends on grade, geometry, tolerance, quantity, and finishing — there is no single universal crossover thickness.
Factor 3 — Part Complexity
Contour length is the main pricing driver for the cutting fee. A circular disc with 10 holes has more perimeter than a square of the same area. More perimeter = more cutting time = higher cost.
Very small features relative to plate thickness (near the minimum hole rule), narrow slots, and sharp re-entrant corners require slower cutting and more machine time. They also increase scrap risk. Complex parts can cost more per kg — by a significant margin on some geometries.
Factor 4 — Order Volume
Setup costs — nesting, programming, fixture preparation — are spread across the order quantity. An order of 5 pieces carries higher setup cost per piece than an order of 500 pieces with the same drawing.
The volume threshold where setup cost becomes negligible varies by part. For simple rectangular blanks, it may be 20 pieces. For complex profiles, it may be 100. We flag this when quoting small orders.
Factor 5 — Secondary Operations
Beveling is priced per meter of beveled edge, with a multiplier for angle complexity. V-groove at 45° is cheaper per meter than X-groove with specific land dimensions.
Shot blasting (Sa2.5) is priced by part surface area, with a minimum charge. Drilling is per hole. Tapping is per threaded hole. Each secondary operation is listed as a separate line item in the quotation.
