Steel Plate Cutting for Mining Equipment: Wear Plate, Thick Plate, and Lead Times

Mining equipment demands steel that takes sustained abuse. AR400 and NM400 wear plate for ground-contact and abrasion applications. Q345 and Q690 structural plate for frames and chassis. Both require different cutting approaches.

Steel Types Used in Mining Equipment

GradeHardnessApplicationTypical Thickness
NM400 / AR400~400 HBWBuckets, chutes, liners, lip plates12–50mm
NM500 / AR500~500 HBWHigh-wear applications, crusher parts10–40mm
Q345 / S355StructuralFrames, chassis, support structures20–100mm
Q690 / S690High-strengthPrimary structural members under load20–80mm

Cutting Challenges for Wear Plate

NM400 and AR400 at 360–440 HBW are harder than structural steel at the same thickness. Cutting with unadjusted parameters can cause edge softening — the HAZ may lose hardness — or increase edge cracking risk on rapid cooling.

For NM400 below 25mm, laser cutting with adjusted parameters is feasible and produces a narrow HAZ. Above 25mm, flame cutting with preheat confirmation is the standard approach at YUNCUT. Confirm material grade and thickness before placing the order — wear plate processing is confirmed at quotation stage, not assumed.

Thick Plate Requirements in Mining

Main frames and chassis for large mining equipment frequently run 50–150mm in Q345 or Q690. This is entirely within YUNCUT's flame cutting range (30–200mm).

For Q690 thick-plate sections, preheat may be required depending on grade, thickness, specification, and process review. For parts with long narrow profiles at 100mm+, thermal distortion management must be discussed before production. These are not obstacles — they are process steps that need to be confirmed upfront.

Capacity for High-Volume Orders

YUNCUT operates two production facilities — Suzhou (Jiangsu Province) and Jining (Shandong Province). Scalable cutting and fabrication resources support both recurring production and project-based demand, and high-volume mining equipment programs can be scheduled across both facilities for parallel production.

For repeat programs (same parts ordered on a recurring cycle), blanket order arrangements are available. These lock in pricing and production priority for agreed windows, which can reduce per-order lead time — confirmed per program at quotation.

Lead Times and Supply Chain Planning

Production lead time is confirmed per order at quotation. Ocean freight time varies by route, schedule, and destination — plan total supply time as production plus freight, and confirm both in your quotation.

Mining equipment procurement cycles typically allow for this lead time. The common mistake is not accounting for ocean freight in safety stock calculations. Plan total supply time as production + freight, not production alone.

Quality Documentation for Mining Applications

Mill certificates for material traceability are standard on request. Dimensional inspection reports are available. Pre-shipment photos of finished and packed orders are sent before balance payment is released. Third-party inspection can be arranged — specify at quotation stage, not at completion.
