Minimum Order Quantity for Steel Plate Cutting: What Most Suppliers Won't Tell You
Most steel plate cutting suppliers have a minimum order. They just do not always state it clearly. The minimum might be a piece count, a minimum weight, or a minimum order value. Sometimes it is all three.
Why MOQ Exists in Steel Cutting
Every order requires setup time: nesting, programming, material procurement, inspection setup, packing preparation. For a 3-piece order and a 300-piece order with the same drawing, the setup time is nearly identical.
Steel plate is also purchased in standard sheet sizes. Cutting 2 pieces from a 1500×3000mm sheet leaves significant material waste. The supplier either eats that waste cost or prices it into small orders — or declines small orders entirely.
What Most Suppliers Actually Require
Common minimum order structures in the industry (illustrative — they vary widely by supplier):
- Minimum order value: USD 500–2000 per order
- Minimum weight: 200–500 kg per order
- Minimum pieces: 10–50 per part number
- Minimum cutting length: 50–100 meters of total cut
YUNCUT's Policy: No Strict Minimum
There is no hard minimum order quantity at YUNCUT. Small orders of 2–5 pieces are accepted. Trial orders for new buyers — even single-piece samples — are welcome.
The trade-off is transparent: the per-piece cost for small orders is higher than for production runs because setup cost is spread across fewer pieces. We state this in the quotation. There are no hidden minimum charges or surprise fees.
How Small Orders Are Priced
A 5-piece order of 30mm Q345 parts in a simple profile might cost USD 80–120 per piece. The same part at 500 pieces might cost USD 35–50 per piece. The difference is setup cost amortization and material utilization.
This is not a penalty for small orders — it is the real cost structure. Understanding this helps you decide when to trial-order versus when to commit to a production run.
Trial Order Strategy
A useful trial order for evaluating a new supplier: 3–5 pieces of your most representative and most challenging part. Not the simplest part — a simple rectangle tells you nothing about capability. Choose a part with holes, a bevel, or a complex profile.
Receive the parts, measure them against the drawing, and assess edge quality, packing condition, and communication quality throughout the order. This is a complete evaluation in one small shipment.
Scaling Up After a Successful Trial
After a successful trial order, production run pricing is typically meaningfully lower per piece for the same parts. If you are planning to scale, mention this at the trial stage — it sometimes allows for a slightly lower trial price if production commitment is indicated.
