How to Order Steel Plate Cutting from China: A Step-by-Step Guide

The process has seven steps. Each one has a defined input and output. If you know what to prepare at each stage, most orders move through without delays.

The biggest source of delay is not production — it's incomplete information at the start. Orders that begin with a clear drawing and confirmed material grade typically move faster. Orders that begin with "I need some steel parts cut" take longer because scope questions must be resolved first. Exact lead time is confirmed in the quotation for your specific scope.

Step 1: Send Basic Requirements — No Drawing Needed Yet

Start with: material grade, thickness, approximate dimensions, quantity, and destination country. That's enough for an initial response.

A procurement manager sourcing 30mm carbon steel structural brackets for a project in Canada can open the discussion in four lines of text via WhatsApp or email. We respond with clarifying questions or a preliminary scope confirmation.

  • Material (A36 / S355 / Q345 / or tell us your standard and we confirm the equivalent)
  • Plate thickness and approximate part size
  • Quantity (pieces or estimated total weight)
  • Destination country or port

Step 2: Share Drawings and Confirm Technical Scope

Once the scope is clear, send your drawings. DXF, DWG, PDF, and STEP formats are all accepted.

The drawing review confirms: applicable cutting method (laser or flame based on thickness), minimum hole diameter feasibility, achievable tolerance for your geometry, and edge condition requirements. If something on the drawing is not achievable — too small a hole for the thickness, or a tolerance tighter than the method allows — we flag it before quoting.

We see this most often with buyers sending PDF drawings without explicit tolerance callouts. We ask: 'Is ±1mm acceptable for this application?' One answer, and we proceed.

Step 3: Receive and Review the Quotation

Quotation turnaround depends on drawing completeness and part complexity. Simple, well-specified parts can be quoted within a few working days. Complex drawings with dense hole patterns or unusual geometry take longer.

The quotation lists each cost element separately: material, cutting, secondary processing (beveling, drilling, deburring if applicable), packing, and payment terms. Nothing is bundled unless specifically requested.

Review the quotation against your drawing. If the cutting method or secondary processing scope doesn't match what you need, flag it — this is the time to resolve it.

Step 4: Confirm the Order and Pay Deposit

Typical payment terms for new customers are a deposit before production starts and the balance before shipment — exact terms are confirmed in the quotation.

The deposit locks the production schedule. Lead time is counted from deposit confirmation, not from the date of the original inquiry. For repeat customers, terms are adjusted based on order history.

Step 5: Production — Lead Time Confirmed per Order

Production lead time depends on order scope — material availability, quantity, thickness range, and secondary processing. Orders requiring beveling, drilling, or shot blasting, or orders with higher tonnage, typically take longer than simple cut-to-size scope. The quotation confirms the production window for your order.

The production sequence: plate loading → cutting (laser or flame) → deburring and slag removal → secondary processing if applicable → dimensional inspection → packing.

Step 6: Pre-Shipment Inspection and Photos

Before parts leave the facility, photos of the finished and packed order are sent for your review. An inspection report is available on request.

Parts are measured using calibrated instruments: digital calipers (±0.01mm) and micrometers (±0.001mm). Dimensions are checked against the confirmed drawing.

The balance is released after you confirm the pre-shipment photos. Exact payment milestones are confirmed in the quotation.

Step 7: Shipment and Tracking

Standard packing: stretch film and pallets. Wooden crates are used for long thin profiles or parts that need additional protection during ocean freight.

Transit time by sea depends on route, schedule, and destination — confirmed at shipment planning. North American, European, and regional routes each have different typical windows, and shipment documents are provided before dispatch.

Shipment documents (commercial invoice, packing list, bill of lading) are provided as standard. Material certificates are available on request.

Do I need drawings before I can get a quote?

No. You can start with material type, thickness, quantity, and approximate part size. We ask for drawings when the initial scope is clear enough to need them for accurate quoting. For simple rectangular plate cutting, sometimes drawings aren't needed at all.

What is the minimum order quantity?

There is no strict minimum. Small trial orders of 5–10 pieces are welcome. The per-piece cost is higher for small batches due to setup and material efficiency, but the process is the same as a large order.

How do I know the parts will match the drawing?

Pre-shipment inspection is standard. Photos and dimensional records are sent before the balance payment is released. If supplied parts do not conform to the mutually confirmed drawings, specifications or agreed inspection criteria due to our manufacturing responsibility, we will arrange corrective action, rework or replacement after verification. This is the arrangement — not a special request.
