Export Packing for Steel Plate Parts: What Protects Your Order in Transit
Steel parts that pass inspection can still arrive damaged. Ocean freight subjects packages to vibration, humidity, and stacking pressure for weeks in transit. The right packing method depends on part geometry, weight, and destination conditions.
Why Packing Matters for Steel Parts
Steel parts face three main transit risks: mechanical damage from vibration or shifting (especially for parts with precision cut edges), surface rust from humidity, and deformation from improper stacking or loading.
We see this most often with thin plate parts (under 10mm) ordered without specific packing instructions. Stacked without protection, edges score against each other — a consignment of perfect parts can arrive with surface damage across multiple pieces.
Standard Export Packing Methods

Rust Prevention
Carbon steel rusts. In a container crossing humid ocean air for weeks, an unprotected steel surface can show surface rust on arrival. This does not affect structural integrity, but it creates receiving inspection issues and customer complaints.
Standard rust prevention options at YUNCUT: VCI (Volatile Corrosion Inhibitor) film wrapping for parts requiring clean arrival condition; rust-preventive oil coat for parts where light oiling is acceptable before further processing; desiccant bags inside wooden crates. Specify your rust prevention requirement at order time.
Weight and Dimension Considerations
Typical 20GP container payload is roughly 28 tons net cargo. Many steel plate cutting orders fit within this. For very large orders or oversize parts, a 40HC container provides more volume without significantly more freight cost.
Parts longer than 5.8m (inside length of a 20GP) require a 40ft container or special flat-rack. Flag long parts at quotation stage so packing and freight are costed correctly.

- Commercial invoice (value, HS codes, country of origin)
- Packing list (item count, dimensions, gross and net weight)
- Bill of lading (issued by freight forwarder after loading)
- Certificate of origin (if required for customs or duty purposes)
- Material certificates (on request — confirm at quotation stage)
- Inspection report (on request)
YUNCUT Standard Export Procedure
Parts are inspected and packed. Pre-shipment photos of packed order are sent for buyer review before balance payment and loading. Commercial invoice and packing list are issued on confirmation of shipment. Bill of lading is sent after vessel departure once issued by the carrier. Mill certificates and inspection reports are included in the shipment documents package if ordered at quotation stage.
