AR400 and NM400 Wear Plate Cutting: Hardness, Heat, and Edge Quality
Wear plate at 360–440 HBW is not standard plate. Its higher carbon equivalent means cracking risk increases if heat management is wrong. Flame cutting without process review on NM400 above 25mm can crack edges — sometimes hours after cutting, not immediately.
What Makes Wear Plate Hard to Cut
NM400 and AR400 are quenched and tempered steel with Brinell hardness of approximately 360–440 HBW. To achieve this hardness, carbon and alloy content are significantly higher than structural grades.
The carbon equivalent of NM400/AR400 wear plate is higher than common structural grades — closer to high-strength quenched and tempered steels. That makes the steel more susceptible to hydrogen-induced cracking when rapidly cooled from high temperature, which can happen during flame cutting without proper heat management.
Laser vs Flame for Wear Plate
For NM400 and AR400 at 25mm and below, laser cutting is feasible with adjusted parameters. Laser produces a narrower HAZ than flame, which means less edge softening and less cracking risk at thin sections. Surface quality is controlled according to material, thickness and project requirements..
Above 25mm, flame cutting with preheat confirmation is the standard approach at YUNCUT. Wear plate orders above 25mm are automatically flagged for preheat confirmation at quotation stage. Preheat requirements are confirmed depending on thickness, grade, and project specification.
Preheat and Cooling Control
Preheat slows the cooling rate after cutting, reducing the thermal gradient that drives cracking. The plate is heated to the target temperature, cutting proceeds, and the plate is allowed to cool slowly — not quenched or cooled with compressed air.
Parts cut with uncontrolled cooling can show edge cracks hours or even days later. This is why quality control for wear plate includes a waiting period before final inspection — not just a visual check immediately after cutting.
Edge Hardness After Cutting
The heat-affected zone (HAZ) adjacent to the cut edge will have different hardness than the base material. For NM400, the HAZ may soften below the base material hardness. The width of this softened zone depends on cutting parameters.
If your application requires consistent hardness right to the edge — for wear surfaces that start at the cut edge — a machining allowance is recommended to remove the HAZ before the part goes into service.
